I was introduced to printmaking at Otis College of Art and Design, where I developed a practice in the aged form of etching and lithography. I combined my passion for printmaking and my experience as a researcher and planner at a multinational company to create J. Pera Designs, an experimental surface design studio creating original works for residential and commercial spaces.
Fractals & Fragments is a multimedia project and performance that celebrates the J. Pera Designs debut surface design collection and catalogue, which was published through Actual Source in 2018. In collaboration with Kevin Zhu, SFV Acid, and No)One. Art House, the studio experimented with translating my narrative-based surface designs as movement, sound, and live-rendered projections in a patchworked performance of sorts. It was a way to posit surface design as a visual language beyond its decorative function. We were able to experiment with application beyond three dimensional objects in order to convey the narrative, historical framework, and concepts at play in our surface designs and textiles.
Jill Zachman is a Ph.D. researcher, artist, and designer. In 2017, she founded J. Pera Designs after years of being a manager of strategic planning and research at Toyota USA’s corporate headquarters. She holds a Ph.D. in Educational Research from the Claremont Graduate University and became part of the Otis community in 2012. She is currently traveling and researching for her next collection of surface designs.
